semi-circular bunds
half-moons
demi-lunes
it took me a bit to figure out the name for this... all so i could include a photo that isn’t even of a bund... it just reminds me of them
... also so I could link it to the culvert out link on the golfing page
so here is a ditch with the drain end of a culvert located at the top.
someone installed these rocks here as breakers, this was done to minimize the erosion that heavey rains would cause without the perpendicular lines of rock the water would travel in a much more direct route which could lead to the creation of a rill or gully... more good negative space words...
but a fun byproduct of this is the amount of plant life supported by the slowing down of water... there’s a chance someone is coming over with a hose... but that’s fairly unlikely, if you look around the photo you can see how dry the grass here is (idaho)
this is the reason I started thinking about half-moons,
it’s a frontline method of regreening the sahara, where half-moon shapped holes are dug in long rows. they then collect water in small stores allowing for plant life to grow within the bunds. the plant growth leads to soil reguvination over time, as well as helps to stop the desert from growing.
this slowing down of water reminds me about beaver dams
~in the primary article I linked to in my page about sand, it mentions the desertification in china, and how they’ve planted trees but that they should have planted the shrubs native to the area. warning that the trees will drain the arlready dwindling underground water supplies, but that it might take decades for this consequence to come to fruition.
...even after compyling such a large list of names for negative spaces I still struggle to decide and describe them.
